There have been over 30 movies in the past 50 years which have been about or featured the legendary Greek hero Hercules.
Now director Brett Ratner, (Rush Hour, Tower Heist), is bringing his vision of the mythological strong man who is being played by former wrestler Dwayne Johnson to the big screen, in an attempt to launch a fresh franchise of Hercules based movies. Judging from the trailer Ratner has been heavily influenced by the highly successful previous Greek fantasy property Frank Miller’s 300, hoping to cash in on the current audience’s appetite for sword and sandals movies. This coupled with Johnson’s die-hard commitment to the role of Hercules, which he recently explained in an interview, could well provide this hopeful franchise of a future:
“I trained and worked harder than ever for 8 months for this role. Lived alone and locked myself away (like a moody 260-lb. monk) in Budapest for 6 months while filming. Goal was to completely transform into this character. Disappear in the role. Press journalist asked me today, with the mental & physical toll the role had on me, would I do it again? Not only would I do it again.. I’d do it fucking twice.”
