Cruella Trailer Reeks Of The Joker.

I’m not a fan of the growing trend of prequel movies which solely focus on a super villian’s origin story. It feels like a redundant viewing process, you know the final outcome ahead of time and everything in-between is threadbare filler.

This brings me to the latest villain origin/prequel movie, Cruella. A movie that stars the super talented Emma Stone as the fashionable, deranged animal abuser and villain of Disney’s infamous animated feature 101 Dalmations. The trailer for the latest Disney live-action character adaptation dropped today and positively reeks of 2019’s Joker and last year’s Harley Quinn movie Birds Of Prey.

The general plot of Cruella rattles along like so:

In 1970s London, young fashion designer Estella de Vil becomes obsessed with dogs’ skins, especially Dalmatians until she eventually becomes a ruthless and terrifying legend known as Cruella.

But who is this aimed at? Is it for kids? A film about the cruel ascendency of a character with severe mental health issues/personality disorder who has an obsessive fetish for skinning dogs? And why is there an Anarchy symbol in the ‘A’ of Stone’s name?

I mean it looks gorgeous and Stone is always worth watching but this feels more like a reaction by Disney to previous villain movies like Joker and Birds Of Prey in an attempt to try and hook that superhero fanbase. I mean as the tweet expertly points out, Disney could’ve saved themselves a ton of money and time.

Cruella is scheduled for release on May 26th.
