Irvine Welsh Has Scripted Springbreakers 2.
If like me you thoroughly enjoyed the surreal and controversial movie Springbreakers last year, then you’ll welcome the news that a sequel is in the pipeline with a script by acclaimed Scottish author Irvine Welsh, (Trainspotting, Filth).
According to Screen Daily production company Wild Bunch have officially announced Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is now on their slate and have released a few details about the film’s premise. Apparently it’s not being touted as a direct sequel although characters from the original will mix with new ones, with no confirmation of Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, Selena Gomez or James Franco reprising their roles.
Welsh has formulated a script which will see bikinied gangsters going head-to-head with an extrme militant Christian sect, (hence the title), who attempt to convert the girls from their wicked, wicked ways. The orginal was directed by Harmony Korine, the writer of Kids, but this time the sequel will be helmed by Jonas Åkerlund, (Spun, The Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ video). Suffice to say this property seems like a perfect fit for the pairing of Welsh and Åkerlund and will probably result in an end product which will send conservative right-of-centre groups and media outlets, postively rabid.
I personally cannot wait.
