A remake of the 1984 cult sci-fi classic The Last Starfighter has been on the cards for some time now. However each time a move is made to kickstart the project it fails at the first hurdle due to a wrangle over rights.

Now Star Wars spin-off screenwriter Gary Whitta has picked up the banner and is set to make a new charge, explaining to movie website /Film that he’s extremely keen to get things moving:

“I’m one of a very long list of screenwriters who would kill for the opportunity to bring that back. It just seems like the rights are impossible to figure out. Maybe one day. If there’s one thing that movie taught me, it’s to never stop believing that anything is possible. Even in Hollywood.”

Both Seth Rogen and Steven Spielberg failed to aquire the rights to this property for their own versions of a remake. Here’s hoping Whitta has more luck.
