Will Smith Won’t Be Returning For Indy Day 2.
‘Will Smith cannot come back, he’s too expensive,’ claimed director Roland Emmerich in a recent interview after he was quizzed on the return of the actor for the planned Independence Day sequel.
Speaking to the New York Daily News Emmerich continued:
‘But he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know from the first film [in the script] and the other half people who are new.’
The director also revealed that the bulk of the cast for the new movie will primarily consist of relative unknowns, instead of A-list Hollywood names. Although the return of Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum’s characters have not yet been ruled out.
Does any one else find this announcement a tad strange? The original film was pretty much synonymous with Will Smith, (let’s face it, for many he was the main draw), in fact most of the movie revolved around his character Capt Steven Hiller and now he won’t have any active involvement in the sequel? So what’s the point?
Independence Day 2 is scheduled for release by 20th Century Fox on July 3rd 2016. A whole 19 years after the original movie…ya know, because of the unwavering demand for such a flick.
