According to the Sunday Times the classic British TV series Dad’s Army is to get a big screen reboot with Toby Jones and Bill Nighy filling out the cast.

The original series starred Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier, and charted the exploits of a group of incompetent local townsfolk working together as a unit of the Home Guard, preparing to defend the South coast of England against a possible Nazi invasion during World War II. The series ran for nine seasons and spanned 11 years and is still regarded by many as one of the finest British sitcoms ever made.

All that is known about the reboot so far is that Jones will play Captain Mainwaring and Nighy will fill the role of Sergeant Wilson, with Oliver Parker, (Johnny English Reborn, St Trinian’s) directing a script written by Hamish McColl who previously penned Johnny English Reborn and Mr Bean’s Holiday.

Of course this won’t be the first time an attempt to bring Dad’s Army to the big screen has been made, back in 1971 Columbia Pictures released a film adaptation starring all the main cast members which did moderately well at the UK box office. For some time there was talk of a sequel entitled Dad’s Army and the Secret U-Boat Base which, unfortunately for fans never saw the light of day.
