As we patiently wait for any more news regarding the planned Gremlins live-action sequel or reboot, fans of the franchise will be satisfied with the news that a new animated series will be hitting our screens next year.
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is being developed by WarnerMedia for steaming service HBO MAX and will be an animated prequel series made up of 10 half-hour episodes. It’ll be set in Shanghai in the 1920s and will explain how a young Sam Wing discovered Gizmo. It will finally answer the question fans have been asking for years: How did Mr Wing come to own Gizmo?
The official synopsis for the series rattles along like so:
“Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”
It feels like a starting point for a franchise reboot. This origin story, which to be honest sounds far too expensive to make as a live-action movie nicely bridges the gap towards a new Gremlins movie.
