Is it me or is this beginning to sound like a colossal omnishambles?
First we had the news that there would be a Ghostbusters sequel featuring the original cast under the direction of Ivan Reitman. But Bill Murray wasn’t keen on the idea and then there was the untimely passing of Harold Ramis. Next up director Paul Feig took the reigns and announced he would be making an all female reboot which would standalone from the previous two movies. Party bags of Doritos were downed in outraged unison from male fan-boys around the world. Now we have Sony stating that they will be forming Ghostcorp, (yep, me neither), which will oversee a number of Ghostbuster films and TV shows to broaden the original franchise with an initial all male movie featuring possible cast members Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt.
It’s understood that this proposed male Ghostbusters movie will act as a counterpart to Feig’s all female Ghostbusters movie which means these aren’t really reboots they’re just division movies in the already established franchise. It’s expected that Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman will be charged with the responsibility at Sony to oversee the marketing and strategy of Ghostcorp.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Reitman explained:
“We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment…This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”
